VMware VMworld is coming up very quickly! Today public voting went online for the sessions that will be offered. A couple of weeks back I submitted four different sessions and was happy to see that they all made it to public voting. So please, if you see fit how about voting for mine? Last year I presented on the Cisco Nexus 1000v virtual distributed switch and had a great time. I am hoping to offer a similar updated/refined session this year. Unlike last year I hope that I can actually relax and enjoy the conference. If you read my blog you may remember that I did my panel defense for the VCDX certification the Tuesday before VMworld 2010 (spoiler alert: I passed). That added a great deal of stress, anxiety, and diffused focus throughout the two weeks after my defense. With that and some other things by the time my second session came around I was exhausted. This year I want to go out, present, and have a blast.
Here are the sessions I have up for voting:
Cisco Nexus 1000v: Architecture, Deployment, and Management (Session #3111)
This session will walk attendees through the architecture, deployment, and management of the Cisco Nexus 1000v virtual distributed switch. The information in this session is based on experience with numerous production deployments of the Nexus 1000v and the audience will benefit from many lessons learned from the field. The session begins with a high-level overview of the 1000v’s design and components followed by several considerations and preparations that anyone looking to deploy this new distributed switch should consider. This includes items such as network design, existing network infrastructure, and overall integration in to the organizationís IT processes. Next, the focus will shift to technical details of the configuration process and several examples will be shown covering many of the common scenarios seen in the field. Day-to-day operations and management of the switch will be covered in detail and include routine items such as adds, moves, and changes, as well as upgrades and maintenance. Finally, a section on troubleshooting processes and information will give attendees the tools they need to support their new virtual switch.
This is an updated version of the presentation that I did last year. My plan is to refocus this a bit more on management and operation. The product has matured. Installation and configuration is easier as is troubleshooting.
Cisco Virtual Security Gateway: Architecture, Deployment, and Management (Session #3232)
The Cisco Virtual Security Gateway (VSG) is a relatively new offering from Cisco that allows for multi-tenant security, compliance, and trusted access in a vSphere infrastructure. When combined with the popular Cisco Nexus 1000v virtual distributed switch it allows great flexibility and dynamic security policy control. This session will provide an in-depth look at the VSG starting with the features and functionality attained by adding it to your environment. Any design criteria that should be considered will be discussed and then the presentation will cover the different components that must be deployed as part of an implementation. Next, the process and methods to deploy these pieces, such as integration with the Nexus 1000v, will be covered. Finally, basic configuration, day-to-day operation, and troubleshooting concepts will be presented so that attendees can walk away with the knowledge they need to deploy this new tool in their virtual environment.
The Cisco Virtual Security Gateway (VSG) is pretty new and there isn’t a lot out there on it. It can be tough to get your arms around exactly how the pieces and parts relate to one another. This session will be similar to the one on the Nexus 1000v in that it will cover the function of each component, how it’s deployed, normal management, and some operational guidelines. Again, like my 1Kv preso, my goal here is that attendees can walk out with a really solid understanding of how this product works and if it’s a good fit for their environment.
A Deep Dive on Virtual Distributed Switching & Cisco Nexus 1000v (Session #2757)
This session will provide an in-depth look at the distributed virtual switching technologies available in VMware vSphere. The discussion will start with an overview of both the integrated Distributed Virtual Switch as well as Cisco’s Nexus 1000v. We will compare and contrast the options highlighting features, functionality, management, complexity, and operational considerations. Each available option provides its own set of features, functions, challenges, and design and deployment considerations. During the session the components, design and implementation considerations, as well as troubleshooting recommendations will be covered in depth. Attendees should expect to walk away with the knowledge they need to decide which of these technologies fit the requirements for their environment as well as the understanding to deploy them.
This session is a modified version of one that I gave at the Carolina VMware Summit last Thursday. Often when I talk with customers during design meetings they have a lot of questions on how the different virtual switching options available differ and what the use cases are. This session goes over vSwitch, dvSwitch, and the Nexus 1000v showing how they compare, not just in features, but also in complexity, management, and cost. During the Summit I used my lab to do a live install and configuration of both the dvSwitch and the 1Kv. That probably won’t be an option here so my hope is to remote in to the lab plus have backup slides/videos showing the same thing. Want a fun challenge? vSphere Networking in the Next Generation Data Centers (Session #3271)
This session will go through the network connectivity options and their uses available in next generation data centers. With the advance of 10Gb Ethernet, Virtual Port Channels, FCoE, SR-IOV and new data center connectivity technologies such as Overlay Transport Virtualization (OTV) and Locator/ID Separation Protocol (LISP) the ways that an administrator can connect a single or multi-site vSphere infrastructures has expanded greatly. This presentation will go over methods and best practices to select, design, architect, and deploy vSphere in to these new types of data center networking environments. Topics discussed will include: 10Gb Ethernet, Data Center Bridging, load balancing, virtual network interfaces, site connectivity, and general vSphere networking configurations for these deployments.
And finally… There have been a lot of enhancements and offerings in the networking industry that relate to vSphere and virtualization in general. It can be confusing and hard to differentiate what is used for which purpose. This session covers a number of different topics and new technologies and will show their purpose, function, use case, and suggested deployment scenarios.
