Follow-up to Microsoft’s Linux Kernel Contributions

Well, well, well…. I wrote the other day that Microsoft was making some drivers available to the Linux kernel under the GPL license. Many people were surprised but it really came down to functionality with Hyper-V. Turns out, there is a little more to the story as reported here.  The problem is that the code Microsoft was using was already under the GPL and you can’t link that with closed software.  That’s a violation of the GPL.  So they were forced to release the rest under the license.  Either way, I think users of Hyper-V come out ahead and for a brief moment Microsoft got some good press.
